CAT

Patient of the Month
No Description

This is "Cat" with Marie, our certified veterinary technician. He made a complete recovery from Hartz Control flea product toxicity.  He presented to us 12 hours after the product was applied unconcious, seizuring and tremoring.  He was hospitalized and treated with intravenous fluids, anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants.  He was immediately bathed to remove any residue of the product.  After 2 days in the hospital Cat went home, on his way to a full recovery.

Most commonly, we see cases where the cat is toxic from a dog product being appied; however, in this case the owner stated the product labelled for cats was applied.

Did you know...

Permethrins are the active ingredient of many over-the counter flea control products.

They can affect the nervous system and cause repetitive nerve discharges-  tremors and seizures.

Kidney failure can be a secondary result.

Signs of toxicity develop in a few hours or may be delayed up to 48 hours.

Hartz Control and similar products for dogs contain very high concentrations of permethrins (45-65%) and a few  drops can be lethal to a cat.

Flea product toxicity is a common emergency seen by veterinarians.

If treatment is started early, there is a better chance for a full recovery.
