Intervertebral Disk Disease
Veterinary Specialist Consultation

This is Puppy! He is a 6 year old neutered Dachshund that had a history of chronic back pain. He would have recurring episodes of not wanting to move and crying when handled. Medicine helped some, but did not cure the problem. He was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease, a common disease of Dachshunds. His parents were referred to Dr. Chauvet, a veterinary neurologist.
Dr Chauvet performed a myelogram, which determined exactly which intervertebral discs in Puppy's back were compressing his spinal cord (see photos at left). Dr. Chauvet performed a spinal surgery called a hemilaminectomy to remove the disc material which was compressing his spinal cord. Puppy made a rapid recovery, and the surgery has greatly improved his quality of life.
For more information on spinal surgery with Dr Chauvet or other neurologic diseases, including the new physical therapy treatments being performed, please visit her website at www.petneuro.com

There are veterinarians who specialize in ophthomology, surgery, radiology, cardiology, behavior, dermatology, dentistry, and internal medicine. They have had additional years of training and have passed national board examinations.
Some are local and some are not. Most see patients by referral from a general practitioner, like Dr's Charley or Whitney at AMC of Lehigh Acres.
General practitioners consult with specialists on certain cases. We contact them by phone or at meetings. We also communicate with specialists through the Veterinary Information Network, an online community of hundreds of specialists and general practitioners.
